Although this album was released in 1981, it was recorded in 1961 and 1962. Side One was the soundtrack for a Goodyear promotional film about jazz; Side Two was recorded at a concert in Saarbrucken while the band was on a European tour. Mike Bryan, a guitarist, had played stints with Benny Goodman, Jan Savitt and Artie Shaw before becoming a Los Angeles studio musician. His sextet featured fellow Goodman alumnus (and bandleader in his own right) Georgie Auld, as well as trumpeter Doc Severisen, later to become Johnny Carson's musical director. Vibist Harry Sheppard had worked with the bands of Cozy Cole, Coleman Hawkins & Roy Eldridge, while pianist Derek Smith honed his chops with the John Dankworth Band. Bassist Jack Lesberg and drummer Mousie Alexander, experienced session players, rounded out the rhythm section. The Sextet is smooth & professional throughout Side One?but they take things to another level on the "Live" tracks on Side Two. A satisfying album by an excellent group.
Featuring: Georgie Auld, Doc Severinsen, Derek Smith, Harry Sheppard, Jack Lesberg, Mousie Alexander.
