Owen Brannigan's success as one of Britain's finest bass-baritones stemmed from humble beginnings. A miner's son born in the village of Annitsford, Northumberland in 1908, he first sang in public as a choirboy at his local church. During the depression, he moved to London, worked as a joiner and performed with the Slough Operatic Society. After training at the Guildhall, he joined Sadlers Wells from 1943-48, then moved on to Glyndebourne and Covent Garden. An OBE, he died in 1973.
