Few instrumental musicians have really significant influence on their peers by age 25 - Clifford Brown was the exception. The young Delaware trumpeter attracted attention everywhere he played, his range, depth and maturity instantly recognized by skilled musicians and normal jazz fans alike. Miles Davis and Charles Mingus saw him as the bright future of jazz. He recorded with Sonny Stitt, Bud Powell and Thelonious Monk - then formed a quintet with Max Roach in California. In addition to trumpet, he played piano and drums at a high level of skill. At the zenith of career in 1956, he was killed in a car crash. To this day, jazz musicians everywhere know and love Benny Golson's homage to the musician and the man - "I Remember Clifford".
