British pop icon Cliff Richard, whose career stretches back to 1958, has adapted to the wandering vagaries of the music business. A Knight Bachelor of the British Empire, he is often known as 'Sir Cliff'. With sales of more than 20 million singles, he is the third top-selling artist in UK Singles Chart history, behind the Beatles and Elvis Presley. But despite the adulation of his home fan-base, he is largely unknown in North America. Born in India on October 14, 1940, he grew up in Hertfordshire after his family's return to Britain. His first single "Move It" is often cited as the first British rock record. Modeling himself on Elvis, he assembled a first-class band, the Shadows (Jet Harris, Tony Meehan, Hank Marvin and Bruce Welch) and churned out a series of hits, including 5 UK Number Ones. Subsequently, he went Christian, appeared in teen movies, sang in Eurovision, collaborated with Kate Bush and Olivia Newton-John and staged a variety of come-backs, most of them very successful. He is also OBE...and regularly whines about not receiving enough airplay.
