Yma Sumac
"The Queen of Exotica", Yma Sumac was a World Music pioneer. Born in Peru in 1922, she developed a vast vocal range through imitation of bird songs in the Andes. With a range approaching five octaves, she performed incan, Peruvian and other folk melodies in a truly unique style that seemed to engender love-hate reactions from both public and critics. At the peak of her popularity, she recorded albums (like Mambo! for Capitol) and appeared in movies (e.g. Secret of the Incas) with considerable success. Record sales of more than 40 million copies make her still the best-selling Peruvian in history.
