Cole Porter
Cole Porter was a composer and lyricist with a string of successful shows on Broadway during the 1920s and 30s. Many of his best songs became standard repertoire in the Great American Songbook: "Night & Day", "Begin the Beguine", "I Get a Kick Out of You" and "I've Got You Under My Skin", to name a few. His effortless command of the genre failed after a 1937 horseback accident, but after a series of forgetable flops, he eventually mounted a comeback with "Kiss Me Kate" which won a Tony Award for Best Musical. Composing the music and lyrics for "Seven Lively Arts", "Around the World", "Can-Can" and "Silk Stockings" alone would assure Cole Porter a place of honour in the Broadway pantheon.
