Joe Newman
Joe Newman (September 7, 1922 – July 4, 1992) was an American jazz trumpeter, composer, and educator, best known for his work with Count Basie and his extensive recording career. Born in New Orleans, he attended Alabama State College, whose band he joined, eventually led and took on tour. After two years with Lionel Hampton, he joined the Count Basie Orchestra, a collaboration which spanned almost 15 years. He toured Russia with Benny goodman in 1962. He then helped found Jazz Interactions, a charitable organization which brought jazz master classes into schools and colleges. His recording career was very impressive - more than 30 albums as leader, almost as many with Count Basie and countless sideman sessions.
