Chubby Jackson
Chubby Jackson was a personable and ebullient bassist, born in New York City, who performed and recorded with many of the jazz greats of the 1930s and 40s. Coming to prominence with the Woody Herman band, he parlayed his solid time-playing and energetic stage presence into a whirlwind career that peaked in 1946 with a Metronome All-Stars chair alongside the cream of swing and bebop. He played on through the 1950s and 60s as both leader and sideman. After making a comeback with Lionel Hampton in the late 70s, he retired to California where he applied his seemingly boundless energy to various pursuits in his community.
