Sergio Mendes (February 11, 1941 – September 5, 2024) was a Brazilian musician, leader of the popular latin band Brasil '66. He released over 50 albums and was known for playing popular songs with bossa nova rhythms. Their first A&M album, produced by Herb Alpert, contained the single Mas que Nada which propelled them into the pop charts. This intial success was augmented in 1968 by the group's appearance at the Academy Awards, performing The Look of Love, which quickly rose to No 4 on the Billboard Chart. Mendes continued to apply his formula to a string of pop songs over the years. His 1992 Elektra album, Brasiliero, won a Grammy Award. His 2006 Concord album, Timeless, featured collaborations with a number of pop stars including Stevie Wonder, Erykah Badu, John Legend and Justin Timberlake. In 2012, Mendes was nominated for an Oscar for Best Original Song as co-writer of Real in Rio from the animated film Rio.
